The Leadership Question
Black men—particularly executives and strong leaders—are often trained to cope and carry for so long that they do not take the time to repair themselves. They mitigate symptoms while helping others, meeting obligations, and keeping institutions or families moving. The source of the strain can remain untouched because there is always another responsibility that needs carrying.
Rise & Lead is a space for interrupting that pattern. This is not weakness and it is not a retreat from responsibility. It is functional healing: taking the time to become more whole, so leadership is not built on exhaustion, fragmentation, or continual performance.
Beyond Managing Symptoms
Diving Within names a condition many Black male executives know intimately: outer achievement may be visible—the title, income, influence, respect, and capacity to deliver—while the inward person has been left behind in the building. In this framework, a man does not need another generic leadership seminar. He needs room to examine the costs of carrying, the habits developed for survival, and the parts of himself that have been deferred.
The work is therefore not simply about “balance.” It is about integration: bringing the work self, home self, public self, private self, emotional life, and authentic self into a relationship that can hold real leadership without demanding that a man perform wholeness.
Why This Gathering Is Specific
Diving Within is designed specifically for Black male executives. Its founder, Rob McGowan, describes the particular burden of leading while Black in America: code-switching, hypervisibility paired with invisibility, managing white comfort, and being told that authentic presence is “aggressive.” That is a specific social and leadership condition; it cannot be fully met by generic executive coaching.
From the Ancestral Egbe framework, self-governance is not the denial of need. A leader who can name and work through what is unresolved is better able to govern his energy, relationships, decisions, family responsibilities, and community service. The purpose is not to make a man less masculine. It is to make his strength more conscious, sustainable, and whole.
What Rise & Lead Offers
The retreat brings together yoga and breathwork, land-sourced meals, ceremonial experiences, shadow work and Jungian integration, brotherhood circles without code-switching or performance, and one-on-one coaching with tools intended to continue after the gathering. The cohort is limited to twelve men, making the experience intentionally intimate.
