The Association of Black Psychologists

Certification in African/Black Psychology (CABP)

Ancestral Egbe supports the development of African-centered approaches to human growth, cultural restoration, and community well-being. We highlight the Association of Black Psychologists’ Certification in African/Black Psychology as an external professional development opportunity worth exploring.

Relationship clarification: CABP is an independent credential administered by ABPsi. This page recommends readers investigate the program; it does not represent reciprocal endorsement, an established partnership, guaranteed eligibility, professional licensure, or certification through Ancestral Egbe. Course attendance alone should not be understood as full certification.

Why Ancestral Egbe Supports This Work

African-Centered Development Deserves Serious Pathways

African-centered psychology provides language for cultural identity, personhood, ancestry, community responsibility, spiritual meaning, and collective restoration that many conventional systems do not adequately hold. ABPsi’s CABP program presents a professional pathway for studying and demonstrating African-centered knowledge, skill, experience, and practice.

Our recommendation is practical: people doing cultural, coaching, healing, social-work, psychological, or traditional-practitioner work should know that this external program exists and should be able to review its standards directly.

A Two-Way Bridge

Traditional Practitioners and Institutionally Trained Professionals

We see value in dialogue between traditional African practitioners and institutionally trained professionals. Traditional practitioners may wish to explore how their learning and experience relate to professional certification standards; formally trained professionals may wish to deepen their understanding of African-centered frameworks.

The traditions and the credential are not interchangeable. Priesthood, cultural study, coaching, social work, and psychology each carry distinct responsibilities and boundaries. CABP eligibility and certification decisions belong to ABPsi. Interested readers should consult ABPsi directly about the appropriate pathway.

Training and Evaluation

Certification Requires More Than Course Attendance

ABPsi describes CABP as a standard of proficiency in African-centered psychology. Its published process evaluates knowledge, skill set, and experience through an application, supporting documentation, primary and secondary portals, and evidence of personal growth and Ubuntu.
